Born in Bradford, awarded a scholarship to Bradford Grammar School, already wanting to be an artist. He drew for the school magazine and produced posters instead of homework. At sixteen he went to art school, followed by two years of hospital work before going to the Royal College of Art in 1959. Awarded gold medal for his year in 1962.
